About
Interactive maps of California farms
This is an ongoing project and will be constantly updated with new information. Some farms may not be listed on this map.
Interactive maps of California agriculture. This site is a public project by Pieter Corn — a home for interactive maps of California agriculture, starting with certified organic crop, livestock, dairy, and meat farms, named family farms, and statewide crop fields.
There is no login. Anyone can browse the maps. A second map is a new page plus data, not a rewrite of this site.
California Farm Map — this snapshot
Named pins built 9/1/2026 · 3,617 named places · crop fields are DWR water year 2024 (provisional)
- 3,348 organic — mostly CCOF-certified operations (farms and handlers).
- 106 conventional — named CAFF family farms that are not listed as organic. This is a directory subset, not California's conventional farm total. See Stats for the Census statewide figure.
- 163 transitional / non-certified — CAFF farms working toward or without certification.
- 38 records skipped (out of California or no reliable coordinates).
- USDA-geocoded extras in this snapshot: 0.
Data sources
- USDA Organic INTEGRITY Database — skipped (set USDA_API_KEY from https://api.data.gov/signup/ to refresh organic NOP records)
- CCOF Organic Directory — Public JSON of CCOF-certified operations. Organic only; includes farms and some handlers. Largest certifier in California, not a complete USDA list.
- CAFF California Farm Directory — Self-reported family-farm listings with names and geocoded addresses. Includes certified organic, non-certified organic, and conventional farms. Incomplete coverage of industrial conventional agriculture.
- California DWR Statewide Crop Mapping, water year 2024 (provisional) — Provisional field-scale crop polygons for water year 2024. 2025 mapping is not released. Anonymous (no farm names). Urban polygons exist in the layer and are excluded from county farmed-acre totals.
What this is not
- Named pins are public directory listings, not a census of every California farm. This is an ongoing project; some farms are not listed.
- Organic named farms are primarily CCOF-certified operations plus CAFF listings marked certified organic. Other USDA certifiers (QAI, OTCO, CCOC, OneCert, etc.) appear when USDA_API_KEY is provided to scripts/ingest.py.
- Certified organic farms on the default map include produce, meat, dairy, and other livestock. Handlers and processors stay off until that toggle is on.
- Conventional farm *names* are incomplete in public data. CAFF lists some family farms; DWR crop fields show where California actually farms, without operator names. Statewide conventional farm counts are on /stats — not the ~100 CAFF pins.
- A CCOF listing and a CAFF listing for the same farm are merged into one pin, marked organic if either source says so.
- Records that could not be geocoded were skipped (see counts.skipped).
